Back in 2007 the world's gear manufacturing capacities were being seriously challenged, particularly in Europe, with the wind generation industry exhausting the majority of this capacity. However, as it is with everything, the industry is ever-evolving and it may be time for gear manufacturers to look for the next 'big thing'.

Floating turbine technology is considered to be the ‘holy grail’ of harnessing ocean wind power, by many in the industry. Recently, a Norwegian energy company started producing electricity with the very first fully functional floating turbine – called Hywind and developed by StatoilHydro.
